21st January - A record crowd of 664 descended on Willen Road this afternoon to see the Swans crash out of the FA Vase to Northen League Ashington AFC.
First half goals from Daren Dykes and Dean Buss weren't enough to keep the Wembley dream alive.
A more detailed match report will follow.

22nd January - The dream of a trip to Wembley finally ended with a 3-2 defeat to Ashington at the last 32 stage of the FA Vase. A record crowd of 664 at Willen Road saw a dramatic first half in which Newport went two goals down early in the game but fought back to 2-2 with goals from Darren Dykes and Dean Buss, only to see Ashington take the lead again just before half time. The home team had more of the possession in a goalless second half but struggled to penetrate a well organised Ashington defence and there were few scoring chances for either team. Newport came close to equalising in the last few minutes, but the Ashington goalkeeper made an excellent save to push the ball around the post with his fingertips and take the visitors into the next round.
Despite the disappointment of this narrow defeat, reaching the last 32 of the FA Vase for the first time was a major achievement and there is still a lot to look forward to in the remainder of the season. A league finish in the top 4 or 5 is a realistic target, although Kings Lynn and Long Buckby seem out of reach. There are also quarter-finals in the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy and the SUCL League Cup coming up soon.
The reserve team's recent good form has brought them three successive victories, scoring 9 goals and conceding only 1, and the under 18s won 3-0 against a good Chesham team.
Willen Road is a good place to be at the moment for anyone who wants to enjoy some live football and the club will be hoping that many in the record crowd who enjoyed the FA Vase game will continue their support and come back regularly. |
19th January - With the big FA Vase game nearly upon us Chairman Geoff Cardno would like to pay thanks to all of those who have (and will) help with the preparations for the match, and also wish Darren and the lads the best of luck.
He said "With a crowd of well in excess of 300 expected the match has taken a lot of organising, and as well as making sure the day itself runs smoothly, we need to make sure everything is in place prior to the day. We are used to crowds of this size (Kings Lynn last season and the MK Dons pre season friendlies) but have never had a match of this importance played at Willen Road.
With the vistors looking to bring well in excess of 100 supporters there should be a cracking atmosphere on what will ultimately be an historic day for the club.
As the regular supporters know if the lads play to the best of their ability they are a match for anyone on their day, and their recent victorys over Irchester and Sleaford, along with their narow defeat at Kings Lynn, bears testiment to that. Ashington however will be no pushover and their excellent form of late means they are coming into the match full of confidence; we will therefore need to be at our very best if we are to progress in the competition". |
