Jags make it a Hat-Trick of Northants Trophies !!

By

…with a win at the Old Northamptonians (Chenecks) Tournament

After a fine victory in the Grange Park tournament the previous weekend, the Jags made a return trip up the M1 - accepting an invitation to play in the Old Northamptonians competition.

There were mixed fortunes in the Group games and some of the boys perhaps a little jaded - after both a very long season and an excellent Team Presentation event the night before. The latter being a great gathering (with many of the Jags family) to celebrate the collective achievements of the boys’ second full season at Willen Road. With thanks to Kierran, Scott, Neil, Brendan and Jon for their respective contributions to the excellent and enjoyable occasion.

Nevertheless, tiredness aside, Old Northants tournament football saw Newport finish a comfortable second in the Group, thereby easing into the Semi-Finals against Grange Park. Although dominating most of the match, the score remained 0-0 at full time - the Jags somewhat disappointed not to be awarded a spot kick, after Dylan was (at least for everyone wearing green and white glasses) fouled in the penalty area. Where’s that VAR when you need it!!! With no extra-time, the contest went straight to penalties… Set up as a “best of five”, the teams remained level having both scored four. So, to sudden death and Newport ‘s guest keeper James then saw the boys through with two fine saves (the referee requiring that the strike drawing the first save be re-taken).

The Final meant the boys facing off against Northampton Falcons, a very fine young side who were known to Newport following a recent 11 a side friendly. The Jags started well and certainly looked up for the match, finding new reserves of energy at the end of a busy afternoon. After netting a first goal, Newport were largely in control and closed out with a 2-0 win, to lift Trophy Number 5 in the last seven weeks!!

After the pleasure and privilege of again collecting winners medals, an impressively large silver cup was duly held aloft - before an enthusiastic rush into the tournament marquee to see a dramatic England win in the cricket world cup! So, truly an excellent afternoon of sport all round…

Once again congratulations all - with another happy day for Newport’s players, coaches and supporters.
